Ecosystem Quiz, BBC Website- KS2 Bitesize Science. Great little quiz that students can help answer questions for- displayed on White Board. http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/science/living_things/food_chains/quiz/q14979838/, accessed February 27, 2013.
Wildlife section of Ecokids also has great information about species of animals. Students can use to access to find out more about habitats, eating habits, where an animal can be found, and where it fits in the food chain.
Biodversity Tab on Ecokids website- Topis include: Definition of Biodiversity, Species Diversity, Environment, Food, and Human Activities. Great for students who want a challenge and who want to learn more.
Biodiversity Slide show- A slide show of 35 animals from around the world. Includes information information about adaptations, where they fall on the food chain and whether or not the are endangered. Great opportunity to learn more about the animals we are studying in various Food Chains and Ecosystems.
neo12-video to reinforce Populations and Communities
Create a Food Chain- This websites provides the opportunity for kids to build their on food chains.

- Investigate and observe how plants and animals within an ecosystem interact with one another
- Examine relationships within ecosystems
Key Vocabulary: populations, communities, carnivore, herbivore, omnivore, producers, consumers,
Lesson:
- View Study Jams Video 1 and discuss.
- Review Living Systems Vocabulary definitions using Smart Board and Study Jam Vocabulary Buttons.
- Review additional concepts using Ecosystem Quiz ,Smart Board, and Personal White Boards. Have students hold up personal white boards in order to evaluate individual responses.
- View Video 2 ( @ 3 min.) on National Geographic (@ 3 min.- Eagle vs. Venomous Sea Snake-
- Discuss Competition-
- Build eagle Food Chain.
- Build Snake's food Chain.
- Discuss this particular Food Web and what other animals might be included in this food web- Snake Island off the coast of Malaysia. Look up on a map and define the characteristics of this ecosystem.
- Discuss populations and communities. Relate to our population and community at school.
- Refer to Study Jams video and our trip to the park to reinforce content-
- Ask-How are we all connected? What does our food web look like? ecosystem look like?
- View Video 3 on National Geographic (1.3 min) Mother's Love-Talk about what animals need to survive. How did we see this represented in this video? What was happening amongst the bears that wanted to fish at this particular location? Talk about "Competition".
- Share what I learned on my Trip to Alaska about the Brown Bear's habitat there and how it fits into the ecosystem. Discuss how the Brown Bear's habitat differs from the snakes and the Eagles and how they are similar. Introduce the concept of limited resources and what that means.
- Add new definitions Living System Vocabulary Matchbooks
- Present Ecosystem Flap Foldables- see additional instruction on Ecosystem Foldable Page.
- Exit Ticket- If you could go anywhere in the world to see any animal in the world Where would you go?(As students reflect, post Google Images of Aquatic Ecosystems and Images of Terrestrial Ecosystems.)
Student will:
- Review key concepts studied
- Review and evaluate student journals for accuracy, quality of entries, and acquisition of learning focusing on the key concepts studied during Lessons 1-5.
- The Science Journal will be Collected for review and returned before moving onto Lesson 6.
- Monitor daily student/teacher exchanges as we discuss new and old material to be sure students are using new terms correctly and connecting with content.
